ASTM Standards

Several ASTM standards have been published for contact angle work. FTA equipment meet these standards when operated in the fashion described below for each standard.

Standard Test Method for Hydrophobic Contamination on Glass by Contact Angle Measurement

  • Designation C813 - 90.
  • All FTA instruments that measure contact angle can meet this standard. The operator must follow the protocol described in the standard.
  • It is assumed you will use Excel or Word to prepare any required reports under the standard.

Standard Test Method for Surface Wettability and Absorbency of Sheeted Materials Using and Automatic Contact Angle Tester

  • Designation D 5725 - 99.
  • This method requires time stamps on images to an accuracy of +/-2 milliseconds. The standard describes one method of achieving this using mechanical "stroke" apparatus. FTA provides alternative methods of achieving this timing resolution. Ordinary operation of Fta32 software provides +/-4.2 milliseconds. Higher resolution can be done with a faster video camera (e.g., JAI M30) or by using image interpolation to determine when the drop first touches the sample. To use this method, check "Pre Touchoff Reflection Sets Baseline" on the Contact Angle tab. It is recommended that you have an instrument with an automatic syringe if you desire to meet this standard. It will require much care with a manual syringe.
  • It is assumed you will use Excel or Word to prepare any required reports under the standard.

Standard Test Method for Corona-Treated Polymer Films Using Water Contact Angle Measurements

  • Designation D 5946 - 04.
  • All FTA instruments that measure contact angle can meet this standard. The operator must follow the protocol described in the standard.
  • It is assumed you will use Excel or Word to prepare any required reports under the standard.

Standard Test Method for Surface Wettability of Paper (Angle of Contact Method)

  • Designation D724 - 99.
  • Very similar to TAPPI 458 and 558.
  • All FTA instruments that measure contact angle can meet this standard. The operator must follow the protocol described in the standard.
  • It is assumed you will use Excel or Word to prepare any required reports under the standard.
